The three borders
A vast region between Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, known as the Three Border area, has become the epicentre of the jihadist violence that has been tearing the Sahel apart for a decade. With some 40,000 dead, 4 million people displaced from their homes, thousands of schools and health centres closed and crops and grazing areas abandoned, a deep crisis is spreading across a region already ravaged by poverty and climate change. This book is a journey between Barsalogho and Dori (northern Burkina Faso), Tillabéri (western Niger) and Mopti (central Mali), an encounter with the victims of violence, a glimpse into their lives disrupted by forced displacement and an attempt to better understand and explain the circumstances surrounding this decade-long conflict that threatens to spread to other regions and countries.
